Gentoo is one of the most Linuxy Linux distributions.
That is to say if you like the things that make Linux what it is, you’ll probably like Gentoo.
I'm also not saying standardisation here is needed right now - the functionalities offered by the various distributions are too different to make standardisation possible at this point.
Gentoo is primarily a source-code based Linux distribution.
You should keep that in mind when installing ebuilds from an overlay.
And because knowing what’s going on is a requirement, the organization of the distribution is as unobfuscated as possible.
For example, in any Linux distribution, you will eventually have to make configuration changes by editing some configuration file; given this fact, isn’t it reasonable to say that all configuration changes should be made in this way?
To use it save and extract it to your PORTDIR_OVERLAY, normally: dev-lang/python-2.3.5 dev-lang/swig-1.3.24 dev-util/subversion-1.2.1 dev-db/sqlite-3.2.1-r3 dev-python/pysqlite-2.3.2 [cutom ebuild - see attached] dev-libs/clearsilver-0.9.7 dev-python/docutils-0.3.5 app-text/silvercity-0.9.5-r1 (I'm fairly good with Gentoo).
I'm not sure berkdb needs to be set as mentioned above by another user.
